Text Box: Coordinator’s Corner

Grant funding to support of the Friends and Neighbors program has come to an end as of September 30. Those who value this community service and the in-home assessments and volunteer matching provided by Pam Fry, our R.N. coordinator, please make donations today. Tax deductible gifts can be sent to the senior center clearly marked for Friends and Neighbors.

Thank you, Pam, for all the caring and fine work you have performed for elderly and disabled homebound for the last four years. I will continue to meet volunteers and receive requests for assistance here at the Mullis Center.

Please mark your calendar for the Medicare Part D Community Forums and plan to attend at least one to find out about changes and options available to Medicare participants for 2012. Annual enrollment is October 15-December 7 this year allowing review and selection a month earlier than prior years.

Informational forums at the Mullis Center are October 26 and November 22 at 2:00. Sessions in the S.J.I. Library conference room are November 1 from 3-5:00 and November 2 from 10AM-Noon. Volunteers will be present to assist you.

Sandra Leschine

Volunteer Spotlight

Sandra Leschine and her husband Whit are thrilled to be in their new apartment in Friday Harbor.  They came to this island last summer from Chicago, Illinois to be near their daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter.  After selling the townhome they packed up and sent belongings ahead to the island and moved into temporary quarters here.

Sandra’s hobbies are art, graphic design, piano music and singing.  She has been volunteering at the grade school library for kindergarten with hopes to continue working there as well as volunteering as receptionist at the Mullis Center.  They especially enjoy the library, reading and exploring this beautiful island.  As a librarian, children’s books, mysteries and history are favored topics.  Art and calligraphy projects and genealogy research are areas of interest for future exploration.

Whit worked as a systems analyst for Motorola and traveled internationally.  Sandra  worked as a school librarian in Illinois.  Now they are getting homesick for home and relatives back in the mid-west.

Their favorite place for walking is Cape San Juan and Cattle Point.  Her favorite things to cook are tilapia, stir fry, quiche, spaghetti, shrimp and salmon.  Maybe we should get her to help in the kitchen as well at the reception desk.
