Llama and Alpaca Health

The only part of this page I am updating is the Vet Section.

If you are a vet who treats camelids
Please email me your info so I can list you.
Most Recent Vet Update Was 2-24-08

These links lead to articles that may be helpful in keeping your animals healthy, or in recognizing and treating disease. I've tried to keep the links to those written by veterinarians or specialists in some field, but a few are written by the general public. Many diseases or conditions may appear similar, so veterinary disgnosis is extremely important. As always, check with your own vet before trying a cure or medication.

Clostridial Diseases and Vaccinations
Top of Page

Clostridial Diseases - Blackleg, Malignant edema, Enterotoxemias, Black disease, Red water disease, Tetanus
Clostridial diseases inflict heavy losses among livestock every year. The family of bacteria, Clostridia, are responsible for these diseases. They generally cause a fatal infection when they enter the animal's body. The bacteria are capable of living for years in the soil because of their ability to form spores, which protect them from the action of the weather. The above diseases are discussed.

Camelid Veterinarians
Top of Page
If you need a vet, here are some that treat camelids. If your own veterinarian is new to llamas, alpacas, guanacos or camels, one of these vets may be able to answer questions. Have your current vet contact them if they need to consult. Please do not bother these busy vets yourself *unless* you plan on engaging them as your own vet. Please do not abuse this privilege or vets will not be listed here. * A FEW of these vets are not familar with camelids (you'll see that info if it applies), but since they DO care for ruminants they are better than a dog/cat vet if you get stuck with no vet at all.

If you are a vet who treats camelids
Please email me your info so I can list you.

I have been treating more and more alpacas for over 4-5 years. I have been to over 30-40 farms. I do all the work for some and share some with other vets (Karen Baum and Kate Hussman) I have worked with old world camelids on a small scale for my entire career (U Ga '79) since I did an exotic animal collection at Kings Dominion for 15 years and still have two clients with dromedaries. I do some llamas, but there are other vets in the area who do most of the llama breeding herds. Most of the llamas I do are pets or guard animals, not breeding groups.
I have attended CE at Ohio twice and been to conferences
given by Norm Evans, Steve Purdy and Toni Cotton.
Camelids comprise at least 30% of my practice time.
I also do sheep, goats and cows.
