Sundays, Love Letters, 8 p.m.
It is a two character play by A. R. Gurney (also, Dining
Room, Sylvia, etc.) Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner
are lifelong friends. They have written letters to each other
since 1937, when Andy is invited to Melissa's birthday party
and presents her with a copy of "The Lost Princess of Oz."
They have known each other since the second grade (the opening
of the play). Love is never easy. When it is true, it runs deep.
When it is honest, we can not bear it. When it lasts a lifetime,
it is a miracle. In his concluding speech Andrew says: "I
don't think there are many men in this world who have had the
benefit of such a friendship with such a woman. But it was more
than a friendship, too. I know now that I loved her. I loved
her even from the day I met her, when she walked into second
grade, looking like the lost princess of Oz. In these letters,
exchanged between two life-long friends and lovers, A.R. Gurney
has captured the essence of how it feels to care for someone
so much that it hurts. Unique and honest, Love Letters touches
that secret place in all of us that forever remembers the very
moment we first saw our one true love.
