THE SAN JUAN ISLAND MENTORING PROGRAM

Some activities mentors have done with their young friends:

Outdoors

tour the island parks (American Camp, British Camp, County Park at Smallpox Bay, State Park at Limekiln)
basketball at the gradeschool covered shelter
swimming
play catch or frisbee
go hiking
(try Mount Young, Mount Finlayson, Cady Mountain, Sugar Loaf, the hiking trail that begins at Skagit College, or see San Juan Island trail maps online)
walk dogs at the Animal Shelter
(11-2 Tuesday-Sunday)
walk the mentor's dog
beach walk or beach clean-up
check out local garage sales on weekends
go to the Sculpture Park
canoeing or kayaking
ride bicycles
free summer concerts in the park or at the Port of FH
sailing or rowing
play golf
make sand candles at a beach
walk the town docks (check out port dock aquarium)
look at tidepools during low tides (
favorite spots include Bell Point at English Camp, Jackson Beach, South Beach, Jakle's Lagoon)
window shopping in town
whale watching from shore along the westside of SJI
visit Roche Harbor Mausoleum or Marina
make a collection (rocks, shells, leaves, driftwood, etc.)
fly model planes
identify trees or look for mushrooms
photography
go watch the child's sports games
go watch middle school or high school sports games
play tennis
walk across False Bay on a low tide
visit lighthouses at Cattle Point and Limekiln State Park
visit another island


Indoors

play board games or card games
go to the library
(read books, help with homework, research something)
have the child give you a tour of his/her school
do origami or other craft projects
pet dogs or cats at the Animal Shelter
(11-2 Tuesday-Sunday)
write stories or poetry together
draw or paint or other art projects
play pool
make cookies, quick breads, or other simple cooking
go to a movie together
visit seniors living in the Convalescent Center or supervised homes
explore local bookstores including used bookstore
check out the Thrift Store
go out to lunch
help with homework or special school projects
tour local art galleries
visit Fun House on Orcas
(free admission for the mentor program, but the ferry costs money)
woodshop projects at the mentor's house
carve a pumpkin; make a gingerbread house
take digital photos and put them together somehow
attend middle school or high school sports games
make a book
(of your time together, illustrate a story, or family book or timeline for them)
watch movies at home
(popcorn? cocoa?)
read out loud to each other
bowling
scrapbooking
knitting
go rollerskating on Saturday nights
(7:30 pm at Fairground Bldg,, must have own skates, costs about $3 each)
visit the Whale Museum
(free to islanders on Thursdays)
visit Historical Museum
(mostly closed during the cold months except by appointment)
Badminton Open Gym
(free, Monday and Friday nights 8-10 p.m. Turnball gym)
Basketball Open gym (Saturday night at 7 p.m., Turnball gym)
prepare entries for the County Fair

SJ Historical Museum Holiday Party (this year Dec. 3, 5-7 pm, free with food and music)
San Juan County Fair
(third week in August every summer)
Fire Department Open House
UW Friday Harbor Labs Open House
(in May, odd-numbered years only)
